Forensic Findings
The forensic examination became the cornerstone of the criminal investigation, providing investigators with scientific evidence that helped reconstruct Muhammad Rauf's final hours and determine the sequence of events leading to his death.
Following the recovery of the victim's body on the morning of October 4, 2023, authorities transported the remains to Bhayangkara Hospital for a full medico-legal examination. The autopsy was conducted by forensic specialists as part of the homicide investigation initiated by the Indramayu Police.
According to the official forensic findings presented by investigators, Rauf's body exhibited multiple blunt-force injuries affecting several parts of his body, with the most significant trauma concentrated on the head and facial region. Medical examiners documented bruises, lacerations, and other injuries consistent with repeated impacts from blunt objects.
The pattern and distribution of the wounds became an important focus of the investigation.
Forensic experts concluded that the injuries were consistent with repeated episodes of blunt-force trauma rather than a single accidental impact. While the autopsy documented extensive physical injuries, medical examiners determined that these wounds alone did not directly cause the victim's death.
Instead, the examination identified asphyxia due to drowning as the immediate cause of death.
According to the forensic report, water and mud were found inside Rauf's respiratory tract, including his airways and lungs. Medical experts explained that these findings could only occur if the victim was still breathing after entering the water, indicating that he had been alive when he was submerged in the irrigation canal.
This conclusion significantly influenced the direction of the investigation.
Had the victim already died before entering the canal, forensic experts explained, water would not have been inhaled into the lungs in the same manner. The presence of water and sediment therefore became critical medical evidence supporting investigators' reconstruction of the timeline.
The autopsy findings also supported other evidence collected during the investigation.
Police had recovered suspected weapons, including a woodworking saw, wooden sticks, and a metal rod, from the residence where the alleged assault took place. Investigators later compared the victim's injuries with the physical evidence collected from the scene as part of the forensic analysis.
In addition to the external injuries, investigators documented that Rauf's hands had allegedly been bound behind his back before he entered the irrigation canal. While the autopsy primarily established the medical cause of death, investigators argued that the restraint would have severely reduced the victim's ability to swim, protect himself, or escape after entering the water.
Taken together, the forensic evidence helped investigators distinguish between the mechanism of injury and the legal cause of death.
The blunt-force trauma demonstrated that Rauf had suffered a violent physical assault before entering the canal. The drowning findings, however, established that he remained alive after the assault and ultimately died from oxygen deprivation caused by submersion.
This distinction became one of the prosecution's strongest evidentiary foundations. Prosecutors later argued that the combination of the alleged assault, the transportation of the injured child to another location, and the decision to leave him in the irrigation canal while he was still alive reflected a sequence of actions consistent with the criminal charges filed against the defendants.
Beyond its legal significance, the autopsy also provided the victim with something that eyewitness testimony alone could not: an objective scientific account of his final moments. In a case marked by conflicting narratives and public outrage, the forensic findings served as the most impartial evidence available, allowing investigators to reconstruct the final chapter of Muhammad Rauf's life through medical science rather than speculation.
