SAN JOSE, Calif. — A man was killed and another was critically injured after a shooting near San Pedro Square Market in downtown San Jose late Sunday night, just blocks from an official 2026 FIFA World Cup Fan Zone, according to the San Jose Police Department.

Police said officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 10:30 p.m. on North Market Street. When officers arrived, they located two adult men suffering from gunshot wounds.

One victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators believe the suspect fired from a vehicle before fleeing the area. No arrests have been announced, and authorities have not released the identities of the victims or the suspected shooter while the investigation remains active.

The shooting occurred several hours after large crowds gathered in downtown San Jose for official FIFA World Cup fan activities. Despite the location, investigators said there is no indication that the shooting was connected to the tournament or any FIFA-related event.

Mayor Matt Mahan said preliminary information suggests the violence was an isolated criminal incident rather than an attack targeting World Cup spectators or visitors.

City officials also confirmed that World Cup fan events would continue as scheduled. Additional police officers and security resources have been deployed around public gathering areas as a precaution.

Detectives have not announced a possible motive, and investigators continue to examine evidence and interview potential witnesses.

Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to contact the San Jose Police Department.

The investigation remains ongoing.
