SAN JOSE, Calif. — The fatal shooting that occurred near San Jose's official 2026 FIFA World Cup Fan Zone sparked concern among residents and soccer fans, but investigators say there is no evidence the attack was connected to the tournament.
The shooting happened late Sunday night near San Pedro Square Market, leaving one man dead and another critically injured. Because the violence took place only a short distance from one of the Bay Area's largest public World Cup watch parties, many initially questioned whether the tournament had been targeted.
Timing Played a Key Role
According to the San Jose Police Department, the shooting occurred hours after the day's World Cup programming had ended.
At the time gunfire was reported, no matches were being shown on the giant outdoor screen, and most fans had already left the area. Investigators said this timeline is one of the reasons they do not believe the attack was directed at the fan zone or the tournament itself.
Victims Were Not Random Spectators
Police said the two victims were San Jose residents who were walking together when they were approached by a suspect traveling in a vehicle.
Investigators believe the suspect opened fire before fleeing the scene. Based on the available evidence, authorities said the victims were not selected because they were attending a World Cup event.
No Evidence of a Terrorism Link
Authorities have also said there is no indication the shooting was an act of terrorism or an attack aimed at large public gatherings.
Instead, detectives are investigating the case as an isolated homicide. Officials have not released a possible motive and have not announced any arrests.
Mayor Reassures Fans
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan urged residents and visitors not to associate the shooting with the FIFA World Cup.
In a statement following the incident, Mahan said the city's scheduled World Cup programming had ended hours earlier and that investigators had found no indication the violence was related to the event.
He also noted that San Jose had safely welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors during the tournament and said one criminal act should not discourage people from enjoying public spaces.
Security Increased as a Precaution
Although investigators found no connection between the shooting and the tournament, city officials increased the police presence around San Pedro Square when the fan zone reopened the next day.
Additional officers and private security personnel were deployed throughout the area to reassure visitors while detectives continued investigating the homicide. The fan zone remained open, and scheduled World Cup watch parties continued without interruption.
Investigation Remains Active
Police have not identified a suspect or announced a motive for the shooting.
Authorities continue to ask anyone with information about the incident to contact the San Jose Police Department as detectives work to determine what led to the attack.
