SAN JOSE, Calif. — The fatal shooting near San Pedro Square Market prompted San Jose officials to review security measures surrounding the city's official 2026 FIFA World Cup Fan Zone, even as investigators reiterated that the violence was not connected to the tournament.
City leaders stressed that the incident was an isolated criminal act. Nevertheless, additional precautions were introduced to reassure visitors and maintain public confidence as thousands of fans continued gathering for World Cup watch parties across the Bay Area.
Why Security Was Strengthened
Authorities said there was no evidence that the shooting targeted the FIFA World Cup or its spectators. The gunfire occurred after the day's scheduled World Cup programming had ended, when no matches were being shown at the fan zone.
Even so, officials acknowledged that any violent incident near a major international event can raise public concern. Increasing police visibility was intended to reassure residents and visitors while allowing tournament activities to continue safely.
More Officers Around Fan Zones
Beginning the following day, San Jose deployed additional police officers and private security personnel around San Pedro Square during official World Cup activities.
Visitors reported seeing more uniformed officers patrolling pedestrian areas, monitoring entrances, and remaining stationed throughout scheduled public watch events. The added presence was designed to improve response capability while also deterring potential criminal activity.
Larger and Better-Controlled Viewing Areas
One of the most significant changes came several days later when city officials announced that official World Cup watch parties would be moved from San Pedro Square to larger, ticketed venues, including Discovery Meadow and the SAP Center.
Although admission remained free, spectators were required to obtain tickets in advance. Officials said the change would make it easier to manage crowd sizes, improve entry screening, and coordinate emergency response if needed.
New Crowd Management Measures
According to city officials, the updated security plan focused on several areas:
- Expanded police patrols around fan gathering locations.
- Greater use of private event security.
- Improved crowd flow through controlled entry points.
- Enhanced coordination between police, emergency medical services, and event organizers.
- Continued monitoring of public gathering areas throughout match days.
Officials emphasized that these measures were precautionary and not the result of any identified threat against the tournament itself.
Tournament Continues as Planned
Despite the heightened security, San Jose did not suspend its role as a World Cup host city.
World Cup activities resumed under the revised security arrangements, and officials encouraged fans to continue attending matches and public viewing events while following directions from event staff and law enforcement.
Mayor Matt Mahan said the city remained committed to providing a safe environment for residents and international visitors throughout the remainder of the tournament.
Investigation Still Ongoing
The homicide investigation remains active, and police have not announced any arrests or publicly identified a suspect.
Authorities continue to seek information from witnesses while maintaining that investigators have found no evidence linking the shooting to the FIFA World Cup.
